Kotor Old Town

Kotor is located on the northern coast of Montenegro, in the bay of Boka Kotorska. The city’s old town and best-known landmark developed around Stari Grad (the local language for “Old Town”), a UNESCO World heritage site, and the city walls are listed separately from five other Venetian fortifications in the Adriatic and Italy.

The bay is the deepest natural fjord in the Mediterranean, and the scenery around it (including the steep mountains that almost reach the shore) is magnificent. Stari Grad is completely surrounded by walls (the mountain acts as the back wall). Four gates provide access to the city: the Main Gate across the Bay, the North Gate, the South Gate, and the smaller New Gate. Cars are not allowed in Stari Grad and there is no standard road name in Stari Grad. Although all buildings are numbered, it is best to use landmarks for directions.

Usually squares are named after the church in their centre, and directions are determined either by the nearest square or by the nearest gate. The most obvious landmark is the clock tower just inside the main gate in the main square. Kotor and the entire Bay of Kotor has long been a vacation and second home destination for many Europeans and Brits. Besides the local language, English is a common language and most waiters and hotel staff speak English.

Kotor, one of the must-visit places in Montenegro, has become the focus of attention for most of this growing tourism. Set in a bay with breathtaking water and mountain views, the lovely city has a wonderful mix of heritage and nature.

Historically, Kotor has been an important location since the early Middle Ages due to its strategic location in a bay where ships can shelter.

One of the best activities to do in Kotor would be to climb the Kotor castle. This walk to the Castle, which offers breathtaking views above the old city, will meet you with a unique view and you will enjoy while examining the historical ruins. Expect rough terrain at your feet, followed by 1,400 crumbling stone steps, it’s definitely an adventure. I recommend that you choose your walking shoes well and take a drink with you.

While the old town of Kotor fascinates with its very nice and really well preserved architecture. You can spend time in many businesses, from souvenirs to cafes & restaurants.

You can explore the church, cathedral and some hidden roof terraces inside and what used to belong to wealthy palaces.

In Kotor, winters are very cold and summers are hot. the ideal spot is between late June and early July, when the temperature is high but not overwhelming, with fewer tourists and really long daylight hours.

It is enjoyable in the summer as well as in the winter, especially during the New Year’s holiday, when the old city is decorated in a very colorful way and with events such as concerts. Do not forget to make a reservation in advance during these periods as it hosts a large number of tourists.

As charming as the old town is, a nice lunch by the harbor with sweeping views of the bay is also a good idea.

You can take a walk on the coastal road and enjoy the beautiful places to eat or drink coffee and enjoy the view.

If you’d like to add a 3-hour excursion covering history, coastal landscapes and water adventures, take a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks, Mamula and Blue Cave to see Kotor’s most popular attractions, experience the stunning scenery, enjoy swimming in the clear waters of the cave, and World 2 Learn some of the historical secrets of the war.
